Is there a formula (or is the decision based solely on how much you want to spend and how many guest (in this case, 100) for determining how many drinks per person should be served at a wedding reception?  -Submitted by Ida

Answer:  On average, each guest will have 4 to 5 drinks in an evening. A single case of liquor contains 12 bottles. Assuming that your using one ounce of alcohol to make every drink, then a case will yield 300 drinks.

If you are serving beer, one-half keg will give you 260 8-ounce glasses. Seven cases of bottled or canned beer is the equivalent of one-half keg.

For the wine drinkers, figure that each guest will drink one full-size bottle of wine.

Here are some general purchasing guidelines for 100 guests:

  • Beer: 9 cases (3 Domestic, 3 Imported, 3 Lite)
  • Wine: 5-8 cases (3-4 Chardonnay, 1-2 White Zinfandel, 1-2 Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • Champagne: 1-2 cases
  • Hard Liquor: (5 liters Vodka, 3 liters Gin, 2 liters Rum, 2 liters Scotch, 2 liters Bourbon, 1liter Vermouth, 3 liters Kahlua)
  • Cordials: 1 bottle each (Bailey's Irish Cream, Grand Marnier, Amaretto, Sambuca, Brandy, Frangelico, Chambord)

Don't forget to have plenty of non-alcoholic alternatives (soda, juice, punch, etc).
